James C. Black, 80, of Winter Haven, died of heart disease on Monday, Sept. 27, 2004. A native of Treece, Kansas., he came to the area many years ago. He worked for Florida Machinery and Welding. He was a member of North American Aviation and Industrial Machinists. He worked on the early development of rocket propulsion for the space program. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of American Legion Post 8 in Winter Haven. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sons, Robert Black of Winter Haven, Stow Black of Missouri, and George Postell of Winter Haven; four daughters, Patty Lou Black and Gammie Gayleen Squirrell, both of Missouri, and Sherry Garrett and Jane Quick, both of Winter Haven; a sister, Sylvia Black of Mo., 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Orange Street Church of Christ in Auburndale.
