He first came to Livingston County in 1859, settling on a farm which they bought two miles west of Pontiac. He was educated in Pontiac and was in the harness makers trade. He worked in that trade for some time. He was also a clerk for Beach Brothers dry merchants and then was a clerk for R B Phillips & Company, (dry goods). For 12 or 13 years before his death, he was a Store-keeper Grocer with his brother-in-law, Joe S Reed.

On 4 Aug 1881 in Livinsgton Co, IL, he married Mis Katie Louise Reed, daughter of Capt and Mrs H B Reed of Pontiac.

He is survived by one daughter, Katherine, and wife, Katie.
