Clarence Edward King was born on Aug. 26, 1912 near the present day community of Kingtown, located in McCreary Co., Kentucky, a short walk from the KY/TN state line.

He was the son of Thomas Letcher "Tom" King (1881-1973) and Minna Susan "Minnie" Gooch (1873-1971), both buried in the Parksville Cemetery in Boyle Co., KY. The sixth of their ten children, Clarence was the first to be born in McCreary County. The last of Kentucky's 120 counties, it had been formed just about six months prior to his birth. It was formed out of Pulaski, Whitley and Wayne counties on Mar. 12, 1912.

Clarence's father, Tom, was born in Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), KY. He was the son of Jackson "Jack" King (1842-1919) and Mary Ann "Polly" Stephens (1845-1910). Jack was born in the Capuchin area of Campbell Co., Tennessee. Polly was born in Mississippi, her parents having moved there for a couple of years in the mid-1840s. Both are buried in the Stephens Cemetery in Isham, Scott Co., TN. Clarence's paternal great-grandparents were Enos King (abt 1816-1892/00) and Nancy Ann Angel (abt 1820-1892/00).

His paternal GG-grandparents were his father's namesake, Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880), and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). Thomas was the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY, having moved his family from the Capuchin area of Campbell Co., TN to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), KY about 1819.

Clarence's mother, Minnie (pronounced "My-nee"), was the daughter of James Ellison Gooch (1855-1914) and Mary Ann "Polly" Williams (1854-1926). James' parents were Dabney Gooch (1827-bet 1880/1900) and Nancy Colyer (1830-bet 1880/1900). Polly's parents were William Hardin Singleton Williams (1836-1912) and Margaret Hail (1836-1897). Both Polly and Margaret are buried in the Kingtown Cemetery.

On Sept. 24, 1930 , Clarence married Effie Miller (1914-2007) in Boyle Co., KY. She was the daughter of Ambrose Parr "Ambers" Miller (1893-1953) and Ada Alice Honaker (1894-1980). Effie was born in Honaker, Russell Co., Virginia, as were her parents.

Clarence and Effie had eight children before their divorce about 1940, two dying in infancy. Their eight known children are Elbert Lee King (1931-2021), Alice Christine King (1932- ), Arnold Edward King (1934-1934), Orless King (1935-2020), Orville King (1937- ), Glena Cleo King (1938-1938), Beulah Frances King (1940- ) and Dorse Allen King (1940- ). There last two children, Beulah and Doris, were fraternal twins.

Clarence remarried in May of 1841, to Flora Mae Davis (1918-2000). That marriage, which produced no children, was short lived and also ended in divorce.

About 1942, Clarence moved to Chester, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania with his brothers, Luther King (1907-2000) and Oscar King (1909-2003), cousin/brother-in-law Ernest "Steve" Stephens (1916-1981) and cousin Edward Stephens (1910-1996), to serve as a welder (ship yards) during the WWII effort. They had been trained as welders by the US government in Lexington, KY.

It is unknown just how long Clarence stayed in Chester but by the end of the war he was back in Kentucky. His brothers (Luther and Oscar) decided to stay in Pennsylvania following the war, as did his brother-in-law (Ernest). His cousin, Edward, returned to Boyle Co., KY and eventually owned a farm just outside Junction City in Boyle Co., KY.

About Oct. 7, 1947, in Clark Co., Indiana, Clarence (35) married 19 year old Rachel Nell Karnes (1928-2000), a native of Adair Co., KY. They had met while Clarence was a patient in a Louisville hospital where she was employed. Their marriage produced five children before it too, ended in divorce. There children are Brenda Carol King (1950-2021 ), Patricia Darlene King (1952- ), Kathy L. King (1058- ), Lawrence Edward "Larry" King (1960-2016 ) and Teresa King.

About 1971, Clarence married retired McCreary County school teacher, Essie Evelyn King (1914-2000). Twice widowed, Essie was the daughter of Edward King (1895-1951) and Louverna "Lillie" Ross (1874- ?). Her father, Edward, from Whitley Co. (McCreary Co.), KY, was a son of Rev. Burel King (1875-1945) and Mittie Alice Gooch (1881-1962). Mittie was a sister to Clarence's mother, Minnie, and probably had been the midwife at his birth.

Clarence died on June 3, 1978 in Danville (hospital), Boyle Co., KY at the age of 65. He is buried in the Parksville Cemetery next to his parents. His wife, Essie, eventually married Fred M. Waters (1906-1993) in 1986. Four times widowed, she died in 2000 at the age of 96 and is buried in the Kingtown Cemetery next to her fourth husband, Fred.
