Ellen Evelyn Plaggemeyer, 90, of Big Timber passed away Marrch 22, 2003 at Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber.
Ellen was born August 24, 1912 in Sweet Grass County to Bert and Weitche “Winnie” (Sikkama) Plaggemeyer. She grew up on the family ranch in the Wormer District, the last of 11 children. She had four sisters (Rena, Etta, Clara and Edith) and six brothers (Harry, Abe, John, Fred, Dick and Lou).
Ellen prefferred the outdoors, spending a lot of time with her dad and brothers doing ranch work. As she always said, “I didn’t learn to do much cooking or homework because I would rather be outside”.
During high school she and Harry ‘batched it’ in town during the week, staying in the home on Fourth Avenue purchased fort hat purpose.
After graduating high school, Ellen went to Great Falls to study nursing, but was called home before finishing school to care for her elderly parents on the home place. After her father passed away, she moved to townwith her mother and sister and cared fort hem both for many years.
She spent most of her life caring for others, and then she added her little greenhouse so she could care for plants. Some of our favorite times were helping her “play in the dirt”. During the years she operated the greenhouse, any young child who came with a parent would walk away with a free pansy plant. There are a lot of childhood memories connected with those pansies – just ask everyone who grew up in Big Timber during the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s.
We, her family, have always considered Ellen was one of God’s angels here on earth. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, was an active and constant member of her church, and was loved by everyine who knew her. It has been no contest for her to earn “Favorite Aunt” status in the Plaggemeyer family.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at the Congregational Church. Pastor Bryan Baker officiated at the services. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber. Lowry Funeral Home assisted the family with arragements.
