Gruver Home Badly Damaged by Blaze
Gruver – Gruver and Estherville Firemen were called yesterday to put out a fire in the John Goldsberry home, located about half a block from Lincoln-Central School in Gruver. The fire apparently started shortly before 4 p.m.

The Goldsberry family acknowledged with grateful appreciation today the work done by students of the school as they helped to remove all household furnishings, including curtains and rugs from the ground floor of the home. Among the furnishings carried out by the young folk was a china closet which was taken across the street to the Ida Harvey home with not a dish broken.

After the fire was over, the students helped to carry the furnishings to the enclosed front porch of Miss Harvey's home, the garage of Allen Hiles, next door neighbor of the Goldsberrys, and the garage and barn of the Goldsberrys.

Extensive fire and water damage was done to the upstairs furnishings.

Mr. and Mrs. John Catlin and children of Inglewood, Calif., son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Goldsberry had arrived in Gruver about 20 minutes before the fire was discovered. They and the Kenneth Goldsberry family of Burlington, expected in Gruver tonight or tomorrow, had planned to visit in the parental home for the Easter holiday and in observance of Mr. Goldsberry's 93rd birthday. Actual date of Mr. Goldsberry's birthday is Tuesday, April 24.

Estherville Fire Chief Albert said the blaze appeared to originate in the southeast corner of the second story of the home, although the exact cause of the blaze was not determined.

The fire burned its way through the floor separating the first and second floors and through the ceiling, and roof of the second story of the home. Extensive smoke and water damage was sustained.

Firemen worked for about an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze.

Estherville firemen were called out at 4:10 p.m. after a call was received here from Mrs. Mike Graves of Gruver.

Mr. and Mrs. Goldsberry, the Catlin family and the Kenneth Goldsberrys will be staying with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Goldsberry of Gruver and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Martin and children. Floyd Goldsberry and Mrs. Martin are son and daughter of the Goldsberrys. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 19, 1962)
