James was the son of Joseph Samuel & Sarah Ann (Gilliam) Russell. He married Louise Francis Oldham, the daughter of Tapley A. & Margaret Adeline (Butler) Oldham.

James and Louise's children were:
Montie Lee b - February 17, 1892
Mary Ethel b & d - July 07, 1894
Maggie Frances b - July 04, 1895
Myrtle "Mert" Ann b - August 09, 1897
Mayme "Jimmy" Margaret b - July 02, 1899
John Lafayette b - January 20, 1902
Samuel Tapley b - March 12, 1904
Charley Brooks b - May 28, 1906
May b - July 20, 1908
Viola "Ollie" Jean b - July 23, 1911
Lessie "Lee" Naoma b - May 07, 1914

James made his living farming. Louise died in Gran Quivira, NM, on April 13, 1933, at the age of 37. James died in Albuquerque, NM many years later on March 12, 1960. His obit follows:

"RUSSELL- James M. Russell, 91, resident of Belen, passed away early Monday morning in an Albuquerque hospital. He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are three sons, John, Sam, and Charlie Russell, all of Roswell; five daughters, Mrs. Montie Turner, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Jones Turner and Mrs. Jim Langal, Albuquerque, Mrs. Marvin Wright, Belen; 37 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Romero funeral chapel in Belen by the Rev. J.H. Horn. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gran Quivera Cemetery. Romero Funeral Home of Belen is in charge of arrangement."
