His first marriage was to Amanda M. Taylor in Franklin Co, TN, on Mar. 2, 1848, by W.B. Wagores, J.P. His name was shown as Samuel Russell on the marriage record; hers as Amanda M. Taylor.

Samuel & Amanda Russell, ages 28 & 22, lived in Washington, Sevier Co, AR with their son, William, age 1. He supported the family by farming. The Civil War began on April 12, 1861. Samuel, age 39, & his brothers, William, Elijah, & James S. signed up on the side of the Confederacy. Samuel & William enlisted in the 4th Arkansas State Infantry Regiment, Company I, in Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co, AR on Oct. 26, 1861. Elijah & James served in the the 4th Arkansas Infantry in Company H.

At the time Samuel joined the war, he & Sarah had three children as well as his son by Amanda.

Samuel's wealth had increased by 1880 as shown by the 1880 Agriculture Census of Hickman township:
"Samuel Russell owned 20 acres improved and 50 acres unimproved land worth $600. He had $125 worth of farm tools and $350 worth of livestock. He had spent $40 on his fences and paid $50 in wages for 16 weeks of farm labor.

Estimated farm production was $400. He had 3 mules or asses, 2 milch cows and 3 other cattle. 2 calves were dropped and he had purchased 2 head of cattle, sold 5 and slaughtered one. 100 pounds of butter was churned. 5 sheep had dropped 2 lambs. 2 fleeces weighed 4 pounds. He had 14 swine, 12 barnyard and 28 other poultry which laid 50 dozen eggs. 13 acres produced 400 bushels of Indian Corn, 6 acres produced 100 bushels of oats, 10 acres produced 40 bushels of wheat, 7 acres produced 6 bales of cotton and 3 acres of sorghum provided 80 gallons of molasses. ? acre with 20 trees produced 10 bushels of peaches worth $3 and he had cut 60 cords of wood worth $60."

Samuel died about 1884 in Scott County, AR, & was buried in the SE corner of Square Rock Cemetery. He doesn't have a stone to mark his passing.
