Wake services for James J. Kelly of Oklahoma City were held Oct. 25. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. Mass of Christian Burial was said Oct. 26 at the church, with The Rev. Michael Roethler officiating. Burial was in El Reno Cemetery under the direction of Hahn-Cook Funeral Home, Oklahoma City. Mr. Kelly died Oct. 22 in Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was raised in El Reno and left the city in 1930, when he graduated from Sacred Heart School.

James J. Kelly, former president and chief operating officer of Kerr-McGee Corp., died Thursday night at Baptist Medical Center. Kelly, 74, was found in his car at the Marriott Hotel following what appeared to be a minor accident.

He graduated from Cameron College in Lawton and received a degree in civil engineering from Okla. A&M in Stillwater. He joined Kerr-McGee in 1946 as manager of the company's refining division. He served as president of Kerr-McGee 1973-1977, when he retired. Served on board of directors of Kerr-McGee, Bank of Oklahoma, chairman of board at St. Gregory's College, member of Board of Governors of the Development Foundation of OU, director of St. Anthony's Hospital and was active in several associations for the development of higher education in the state of Oklahoma. He is survived by daughter, Karen "Kay" Batchelor of Connecticut; a son, Thomas J. Kelly, Norman, Ok.; 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; sister, Helen Hendrix, OKC; brothers, Robert T. of Michigan and Richard C. of OKC. Wake services will be Sunday, 7:00 p.m. at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel. Mass Monday, 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady's Cathedral, with interment at El Reno Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to St. Gregory's College, Shawnee, Ok.

A Kerr-McGee official speculated a heart attack may have caused Kelly to lose control of his car, which collided with another vehicle, causing minor damage.
Kelly served as president of Kerr-McGee Corp. from 1973 through 1977. A native of El Reno and a 1936 civil-engineering graduate of Oklahoma State University, Kelly joined Kerr-McGee in 1946 as manager of the company's refining division.
He was elected a vice president of the company in 1954, an executive vice president in 1970 and a director in 1972. Kelly became president of Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., a Kerr McGee subsidiary, in 1967. Kelly had served as chairman of the board at St. Gregory's College in Shawnee and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Development Foundation at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He served as a director of the Asphalt Institute and was a member of the Manufacturing Chemists Association, the American Petroleum Institute, American Society of Military Engineers and Twenty-Five Year Club of the Petroleum Industry, Newcomen Society.
