Thomas was the 4th child and son of Wells and Celia Ann Elizabeth Causey Joiner. He was born in Sumter Co. Ga. He enlisted on March 4, 1862 in what was then Campbell County, with his brothers Robert Lawson, and Green Rufus in Company K, the 41st Regiment.

In the 1870 Sumter Co. census, Thomas E.J. is listed by himself, 28 years old, and his profession is listed as "dry goods".

In the 1880 Sumter Co. census, Thomas is listed with wife, Annie E., 30 years, and daughter, Emma, 6 years.

In the 1900 Sumter Co. census Thomas is listed with wife, Annie, son Thomas E. J. born Nov 1882, daughter, Emma M. Bagley, and granddaughter, Elizabeth J. Bagley.

Americus, Ga., April 6. –(Special.)- Thomas E. Joiner, one of Americus' oldest citizens, died this morning after a protracted illness. The deceased was nearly 70 years old and was for many years prominently identified with the mercantile interests in Americus. He served through the war with the Forty-first Georgia regiment. His only surviving brother is John Cowart Joiner of Atlanta.

Note: Sgt. Joiner was wounded in the head during Dec. 1864, most likely at the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee Dec. 15th & 16th, 1864.
