Chas. R. Pierce, a former sheriff and county collector of Pemiscot County, passed away at his home in the south part of town being due to a dropsical condition.
Mr. Pierce had been in ill health for several years and for the past two or three years he has been unable to get about very much. He has been confined to his bed for the past four months. This morning he appeared to be resting very well and ate a hearty breakfast and Mrs. D.D. Pinion, Mrs. Ben Holly and Miss Allie Green drove to Memphis to spend the day and were away from home when their father died. Sometime between eight and nine o'clock he told Mrs. Pierce that he was getting cold and asked for cover, which was placed over him. At 9 o'clock he passed away.
Mr. Pierce was one of the early residents of Caruthersville and this community and lived in this county when the majority of its area was in woods. He served as a peace officer back in the "wooly" days when most of the travel was on horseback, and a large number of the roads were merely trails through the woods.
Mr. Pierce engaged extensively in farming and the raising of livestock and at one time had large land holdings in this county, but his willingness to sign notes, and business reverses and bank failures in later years, caused him to lose considerable of his holdings.
He was a hail fellow, well-met, and very liberal in his givings when he had money, especially where children were concerned.
In addition ot holding the office of sheriff, Mr. Pierce also served one or possibly two terms as county collector.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Lizzie Pierce, he is survived by six daughters, Mrs. D.D. Pinion, Mrs. D. Ben Holly, Miss Allie Green, Mrs. Buford Thweatt and Mrs. Randol Mead of this city and Mrs. Walter Holly of Cooter; and four sons, Charley, Frank, Fred and Robert, all of this city. Three children preceeded their father in death.
Funeral services were incomplete this afternoon.
