Obituary:
LAST RITES FOR MRS FRED CLARKE ARE HELD IN PIERCE

Mrs. Fred Clarke, 64, who will always be remembered for her kind acts among her friends and especially the sick, passed away at Nightingale hospital last Thursday night at 10 p.m. after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at Pierce on Monday, March 18, at 3:00 p.m. Burial was made in the family plot in the Wharton cemetery, with Rev. Milton Knox officiating.

A descendant of the early settlers in Virginia, Cora Wade Sanders was born in Warsaw, Richmond County, Virginia, on February 7, 1882, one of fifteen children. In the winter of 1902, on a trip to Washington D.C., she met Mr. Clarke, who was connected with the Department of Agriculture. They were married in the spring of 1903 at the Cobham Park church in Warsaw, Virginia, and for a short time, made their home in Washington. They moved to Texas the first time in 1904 when Mr. Clarke was sent to Mackey to conduct an agricultural experiment in cooperation with the late A.P. Borden.

In 1903 the Clarkes organized a Presbyterian church in Pierce with Mrs. Fred Clarke assistant superintendent of the Sunday school classes, Mrs. Borden, superintendent, and Fred Clarke as elder. Mrs. Clarke was continuously active in her church work throughout her entire life.

Mr. And Mrs. Clarke were sent to Charleston, S.C. in 1909, to conduct a rice experiment, but returned to Texas to engage in rice farming on the Pierce Estates, a year later. This connection continued to the present time.

The Clarkes made their home in Pierce until 1936 when they moved south of El Campo. Mrs. Clarke was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and had served in every office during her membership.

Her survivors include her husband; six children, Mrs. Naomi Chappell, Mrs. Amy Smith, Horace Clarke, Mrs. Elsie Lincecum, F. Webster Clarke, and Robert Able Clarke; twelve grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bland Brown of Kennard, Va.; and eleven brothers, Lawson, Grey, Hammy, Garfield, Smith, Sam, Judson, Steven, Fred, Barry and Julian Sanders, all of Warsaw, Va. Preceding her in death were a son, Fred Clarke, Jr., a sister Rose and one brother, Frank. Attending the funeral from Virginia were Smith Sanders, Mr. And Mrs. Julian Sanders , and Mrs. Bland Brown.

Active pallbearers were J. W. Kubela, Pierce , Dr. A. L. Lincecum, Jack Hutchins, Frank Kral of Wharton, Jim Forgason of Hungerford and Tommie Dixon of Wharton.
