Fred Webster Clarke Jr., 86, of El Campo, died Monday, March 31, 2008.

He was born Sept. 25, 1921 in Pierce to Fred Webster Clarke Sr. and Cora Wade Sanders Clarke. Mr. Clarke was a resident of El Campo until 1943 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served as a P-38 pilot with the 41st Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in the Asiatic Pacific Theater where he earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He met and married Rose Lee in Muskogee, Okla. on March 3, 1945, while both were stationed at Muskogee Air Force Base.

Upon discharge from the Air Corps in 1946, Mr. Clarke moved to Houston where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Houston. Following graduation, he moved with his family to El Campo to pursue a lifelong career in rice farming and ranching.

He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of El Campo where he sang in the choir, and of American Legion Post 251, the VFW, the Elks Lodge, and the ARC of El Campo.

Mr. Clarke was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; three brothers; and a son, Christopher Sanders Clarke.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Clarke of El Campo; sons, Fred Webster Clarke, III and wife Laura of New Haven, Conn., and Stephen Lee Clarke and wife Charlene of El Campo; daughters, Rose Clarke Douglass and husband Noble of Bryan and Constance Clarke of El Campo; grandsons, Peter Clarke of Los Angeles, Calif., Samuel F.W. Clarke of New Haven, Conn., Levi Douglass and wife April of Bryan, and Britton Douglass of Houston; and granddaughters, Zia Lowe and husband Jason of Bastrop, and Lee Ann Calaway of Bastrop.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 3 at Triska Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will be present to receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m. at Wharton Cemetery with the Rev. David Northcutt officiating, followed by military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 251.

The family requests that memorials be sent to The First Presbyterian Church of El Campo or to the El Campo ARC at P.O. Box 227, El Campo, Texas
