Alice Naomi Clarke married Lenard William Chappell on February 8, 1926 in Houston, Texas.
She was the daughter of Fred Webster and Cora (Sanders) Clarke.

Obituary:
Naomi Chappell Naomi Clarke Chappell, 88, of El Campo, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1992. She was born Alice Naomi Clarke, April 16, 1904, in Wellsford Wharf, Va. to the late Fred Webster Clarke of Leamington, England, and Cora Wade Sanders of Richmond County, Va.

She was named after Teddy Roosevelt's daughter, Alice. Alice asked Mr. Clarke, who was stationed at the White House during Roosevelt's term, to name his child, if it were a girl, after her.

Chappell was El Campo's 1988 Citizen of the Year and was a retired teacher. She was a member of the Wharton County Democratic Party, the El Campo Garden Club, the Chantilly chapter of the DAR in Montross, Va., the Texas Farmer's Union, the Texas Ornithological Society, the El Campo Council for Retarded Children, Band Mothers of El Campo, Wharton County Historical Commission and Sons of Hermann Fidelity Lodge #73 for more than 50 years. She did the U.S. Government bird count for the Audubon Society since the 1940s and was in the ground observer corp during World War II.

She is survived by daughters, Marie Poage of Houston, Jean Daws of Hammond, La., and Zava Liddell of El Campo; son, Terry Chappell of Danevang; brothers, Fred Webster Clarke Jr. of El Campo and Robert Able Clarke of Terlingua; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Leonard Chappell.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Du Broc and Rev. Charles Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Wharton Cemetery under the direction of Wheeler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Mary Alice Daws, Brian and Charles Chappell, Mark Liddell, Garner Vogt, Randy McMahon and all grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Lucy and Les Collins, Dr. Walter and Roberta Presley, Jerry and Dayle Aulds, all of El Campo and Willard and Doris Finkelstein of Austin. Memorial donations may be made to the El Campo branch library and the American Cancer Society.
