Wallace was one of 10 children born to William Haemer Ashford and Amanda Jane Sullivan. On June 9, 1920, he married Jennie "Jackie" Hango (1899-1958) in Clark County, Washington. They had two sons: Wallace Raymond Ashford, Jr. (1922-1946) and Grant Leland Ashford (1923-1948).

In 1960 he married Mary Anita Green (1936-1999) in Skamania County, Washington. They had five children:
Daniel Lynn Ashford, born in 1957
Ruth Emma Jane Ashford, born in 1960
John Wallace Ashford, born in 1963
James Edward Ashford, born in 1966, died in 1987
David William Ashford, born in 1970

A 66-year area resident, Mr. Ashford came to Castle Rock in 1916 and moved to Kelso in 1921. He was one of Long Bell's first school bus drivers and also had worked for the company as a millwright and carpenter. During World War II he was employed in the shipyards. He was a former member of the Kelso Elks and the Cowlitz County Moose Lodge.
