Mintford E. "Pete" Barnard, 91, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Palmyra, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville. He was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Athensville, the son of William E. and Beryl Huston Barnard. He married Virginia E. Sadler on April 23, 1938, in Bowling Green, Mo. She preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2005.

Surviving are two sons, Russell E. (wife, Jeanette) Barnard of Scottville and James L. (wife, Sherry) Barnard of Waverly; two daughters, Phylis C. Dennis (companion, John Parrish) of Jacksonville and Karen S. (husband, John) Kreoger of Palmyra; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Pete was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from May 4, 1945 until Dec. 13, 1945. He was a retired farmer. He worked at MacMurray College in Jacksonville for several years mowing the campus. He enjoyed working with horses.

Services were entrusted to Mackey-Daws Funeral Home of Roodhouse, Illinois.
