Gilbert E. Barnard, 81, of Jacksonville, formerly of Greene County, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born April 26, 1921, near Roodhouse, the son of William Ernest and Beryl Houston Barnard. He married Alfreda McElroy in 1945 in Roodhouse. Mr. Barnard was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a sergeant in the Signal Corps in the European Theater during World War II. He received a Bronze Star, an arrowhead for the invasion of southern France, six service stars and a good conduct medal. He farmed in Greene County for many years and retired from Carnation in Jacksonville. He was a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Athensville Baptist Church. Survivors: wife, Alfreda: three sons, Rodney (wife, Terry) Barnard of Chesterfield, Michael Barnard of Apple Springs, Texas, and David (wife, Debbie) Barnard of Sherman, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mintford "Pete" (wife, Virginia) Barnard of Palmyra and Junior Lee Barnard of Bradenton, Fla.; and two sisters, Irene (husband, Ray) Lamaster of Benton, Ky., and Ilene Kryslyniak of Wheeling. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Mackey-Daws Funeral Home, Roodhouse. Burial: Richwoods Cemetery near Roodhouse.
