Born in Dartmouth, Devon; educated at Dame's schools in Dartmouth (Mrs LAWRENCE) and Lymington (Mrs COTTERELL), at his brother William's school in Chatham (Charles DICKENS was a fellow pupil), Mr HINTON's Academy in Oxford, and the Baptist College, Woodland Road, Bristol; supply preacher at Haverfordwest, Wales, 1830; Pastor of Salter's Hall Chapel, Cannon Street, London, September 1830; Pastor of South Parade Church, Leeds, February 1836; visited Denmark and Germany to plead for religious freedom for Baptists there, 1841; Pastor of Broadmead Church, Bristol, September 1845; Pastor of Portmahon Chapel, Sheffield, July 1846; President of the Baptist Union, 1846; Pastor of Rathmines Church, Dublin, November 1860; Pastor of the Endowed Chapel, Clapham Common, London, April 1862.
