He went to his brother William's school in Chatham, with a young fellow-pupil named Charles DICKENS; he followed his older brothers at John HINTON's Academy, Oxford (later known as St Aldgate's School); by 1830, he was a Calico Printer in Manchester; he withdrew from his partnership with Joseph POPE and John HIGGINS, at Horwich Vale, Manchester, August 1834; elected member of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester, April 1836; in partnership with John NUTTAL and Francis WATCHURST, Calico Printers, Manchester, 1837-40; his business in George Street, Manchester, was destroyed by fire in 1844; Commission Agent, Manchester, 1844; Director, Manchester-Rugby and Sheffield-Macclesfield Direct Railway Companies, 1845; he was at Burgess Terrace, Hyde Road, Ardwick, 1851 Census, although water damage obscures details of him and two of his older children (Mary and Samuel) - but the next page lists the three younger children, Emily, Alfred and Ada L. (aged 10, 4 and 2) - his wife Mary was absent, visiting her father at Bowden, with her second daughter Maria; Samuel was a Commission Agent and Cotton Broker, Mottram Road, Staleybridge, 1861 Census, with his second wife and their three daughters; he died at 76 Charleton Road, Manchester.
Samuel was married firstly, at Manchester Collegiate Church, 29 March 1832, to Mary LEESE, eldest daughter of Joseph LEESE, Cotton Merchant, by Ann HARRISON; she died at Stoke Newington, 17 March 1852; they had issue, including the following who have no memorials on this web-site:
1. Mary Leese GILES, born Harwich, 12 February 1832; died at Upleatham, Yorkshire, 20 September 1919; unmarried.
4. Emily Gertrude GILES, born Manchester, 1840; died Manchester, 1880; unmarried.
6. Ada Leese GILES, born Bowdon, Cheshire, 1848; married at Leeds, 1878, to Alfred BRAITHWAITE.
Samuel was married secondly, near Goole, Yorkshire, 10 August 1853, to Margaret FLETCHER; by her, he had further issue:

9. Elizabeth Margaret Turnbull GILES, born 1857; married to Wilson HARTNELL.
10. Agnes Ellen Scott GILES, born 1858; married to Rev Richard Marsden WITHINGTON.
