John was the son of James William "Willie" Freeman and Mary Combs. His military records say his birthplace was Shawnee Oklahoma, but he said he gave a different place of birth on every record, saying he didn't know how to spell the correct name. I think he may have been born in Tahlequah, since it is difficult to spell, right over the border from Arkansas, where they came from, and is near where people would have come along the Trail of Tears, or along a western path at that time. He was in the US "National Army" in WWI, serving from 23 July 1918 to 2 Feb 1919, when he was granted an Honorable Discharge as a Private.

John married Winnie Ward 23 Aug 1920 in Amarillo, Potter Co. TX. They had 11 children who survived. Ernestine, Norma and Lois were all born in Amarillo. Ann was born in Green Acres, FL, and John David Jr. and Lily Mae were born in Oklahoma City. Ronald was born in Bethany, OK, and Jerry, Grace, and Margaret were born in Oklahoma. The baby, Mike, was born in El Paso, just before they moved to Merced, Ca., where they lived next door to John's father Willie, and John's sister "Onie" Lurana Leona. His mother, Mary Combs, died when he was very young. He attended school through the 3rd grade, and was shown as a farm laborer at the farm of his uncle David Henry Freeman. He learned to plaster from his stepbrother Archie Huggins and worked as a plasterer all of his adult life.

Thanks to my sister, Kim, who contributed much to this bio.
