Winnie was the oldest child of Sam J. Ward and Ora Virginia Groseclose. She was born in Childress Co., Texas. She married John David Freeman on August 23, 1920 in Amarillo Texas, and they moved to Oklahoma around 1928. Years later, in the early 40's after all the children were born, they all moved to Merced, California where they lived next door to John's father James William "Willie" Freeman and his sister, Lurana Leona Freeman Combs. John and Winnie had eleven children:

1. Edna Ernestine Freeman Hammond b 1921
2. Norma Laird Freeman Smith b 1923
3. Lois Virginia Freeman Porter b 1925
4. Mary Ann Juanita Freeman Julin b 1926
5. John David Freeman Jr. b 1928
6. Lily Mae (Lin) Freeman Brady b 1929
7. Naomi Grace Freeman Dirks
8. Margaret Ruth Freeman Philmore
9 James Jeremiah Freeman (Jerry)
10. Ronald Wayne Freeman
11. William Michael Freeman (Mike)

During the 1930s the Plains, which included Oklahoma, became "dust bowls" that were created by severe drought, and prevented farming because the topsoil literally blew away, sometimes as far as the east coast. The result, was that thousands of families left their farms and migrated to California. They were called "Okies". John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" was written about this phenomenon. John Freeman's father, James William (Willie) Freeman and John's family were one of these families.

This was my grandmother. I will never forget her telling the family that "Rhonda is the peacemaker". I cherish that statement to this day, and I try to be the peacemaker because of it. Love you Grandma!
