Margaret Rosina Walsh Saxon

Margaret Rosina Walsh was one of the fourteen children of Richard Walsh and Mary Ann Kane Walsh. Her siblings were Thomas Walsh, Margarette Helen Walsh, John Walsh, Mary Ann Walsh, Jeremiah "Jere" Walsh, Kathryn "Katy" Theresa Walsh, Ellen "Nellie" Matilda Walsh Gibbons, Richard Walsh, Cecilia Gertrude "Celia" Walsh Broderick, Charles Joseph Walsh, William Francis "Willie" Walsh, Austin Edward Walsh, and Herbert Aloysus Walsh. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Walsh and Catherine Calhoun Walsh; maternal grandparents were Jeremiah Kane and Alice Flannery Kane. Margaret married Arthur Gillespie Saxon in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana on September 4, 1900. Their seven children were Robert Kenneth Saxon, Arthur Richard Saxon, Herbert Leslie Saxon, Alfred Martin Saxon, Mary Helen Saxon, Margaret Bernadette Saxon Billingsley, and Clementina Frances Saxon Osinski.

"Fairview...Gillespie Saxon, one of our most industrious young farmers, returned home the evening of the 4th inst, bringing his bride, one of the most intelligent and estimable young ladies of Alpine neighborhood. May peace and prosperity attend them. They have gone to housekeeping on the farm lately vacated by Mr. Jemison. ...The immediate relatives of Gillespie Saxon and bride were invited to dine with Robert Saxon and family, Sunday."

"Couple Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary One hundred seventy-five persons called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Saxon, west of the city, Sunday afternoon when open house was held in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. They were married 50 years ago September 4. Members of the immediate family were there for a noon dinner, and supper was served to 56 relatives and friends. The house was filled with flowers sent to the Saxons for the occasion, and they received numerous other gifts, cards, and spiritual bouquets. Guests were from Connersville, Rushville, Glenwood, Fairview, Falmouth, Bentonville, Richmond, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, New Albany, Louisville, Ky., Los Angeles and Hollywood, Calif."

"Mrs. A. G. Saxon, 88, Prominent in Rural Work, Dies Wednesday Mrs. Margaret R. Walsh Saxon, 88, wife of Arthur Gillespie Saxon, died at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday at the Saxon home in Fairview Township, east of Glenwood. She had been an invalid since suffering a stroke October 1. Born January 15, 1872, in Jackson Township, one of 14 children of Richard and Mary Kane Walsh, natives of Ireland, she had spent her entire life in Fayette County. After graduation from Everton High School she attended Danville Normal and Indiana State Normal at Terre Haute, and taught school in Jackson Township several years, until her marriage to Mr. Saxon September 4, 1900. Besides her husband, she leaves six children, Robert K. B. and Mary Helen Saxon, at home; Arthur F. (sic) Saxon of Louisville, Ky., Herbert L. Saxon of near Rushville, Mrs. Lawrence Billingsley (Margaret) of Lafayette, and Mrs. Francis Osinski (Clementina) of Burt, Mich. A son, Alfred M., preceded her in death. She also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Cecila Broderick, of Los Angeles; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Saxon, a lifelong member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, was a member of the present church's first First Holy Communion class in 1885. She was a member of St. Ann's Altar and Rosary Society, and Daughters of Isabella, and was a charter member of the Fayette County Historical Society and the Fairview Township Farm Bureau; and the South Fairview Township Home Demonstration Club in which she had held the presidency and other offices. She also was a past officer of the Fayette County Home Demonstration Council, and for many years served on the county 4-H committee which selected recipients of girls' 4-H State Fair School awards. She was a former member of the Adlaide Proctor Club, and since its inception year ago was secretary of the Fayette County Ladies Rest Room organization which was instrumental in procuring a women's rest room in Connersville. Interest from the fund raised by this organization now goes to help promote girls' 4-H work. When here (sic) children were in school, Mrs. Saxon helped organize the Fairview Township Parent-Teacher Association, and served as its president and in other offices for many years. She also was an officer of the former Fayette County Poultry Association, and for many years was county chairman of the Arts Department of the Fayette County Free Fair. The Saxons moved to their present home December 8, 1908. The house built for them then was gutted by fire January 4, 1958, and they erected the present house the following summer. The Funeral Mass will be sung in St. Gabriel Church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Friends may call at the residence after 9 a.m. Friday. The rosary will be recited there at 8 that night.
