Arthur Gillespie Saxon

Arthur "Gillespie" Saxon was a son of Robert Saxon and Mary L. Lovejoy Saxon; his siblings were Daisy Margaret Saxon Sutton, Phebe Saxon Rhodes, Alfred Saxon, Theodore Lovejoy Saxon, and Robert Warren Saxon. Gillespie's half brother and sisters by his father's first marriage to Mary Ann Nichols were Leroy Saxon, Edith "Alma" Saxon Dolan and Mary Ann "Mollie" Saxon Dolan. Gillespie's grandparents were Alexander Gillespie Saxon, Margaret McCrory Saxon, James Sullivan Lovejoy, and Phebe Anne Cox Lovejoy. Gillespie married Margaret Rosina Walsh, daughter of Richard Walsh and Mary Ann Kane Walsh, in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana on September 4, 1900. Their seven children were Robert Kenneth Saxon, Arthur Richard Saxon, Herbert Leslie Saxon, Alfred Martin Saxon, Mary Helen Saxon, Margaret Bernadette Saxon Billingsleyand Clementina Frances Saxon Osinski.

"A. G. Saxon Arthur Gillespie Saxon, 91, died Tuesday at his home in Fairview Township. He had been ill since last December. A descendant of pioneer families, Mr. Saxon was one of the country's most reliable sources of information concerning local history. The Saxons came to Conner's Post in 1811. Mr. Saxon was born May 3, 1875, to Robert and Mary Lovejoy Saxon, and had lived in the county all his life. A prominent farmer, he also did surveying and machine ditching through-out southeastern Indiana, and he was a talented gunsmith. He was a member of St. Gabriel Church, and a charter member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, the National Muzzle Loader Rifle Association and the Fayette County Historical Society. His wife, who before their marriage in 1900 was Margaret R. Walsh of the Alpine community, died January 4, 1961. He leaves six children, Mary Helen and Robert K. B., at home, Arthur R. of Louisville, Ky., Herbert L. of Rushville, Mrs. Lawrence (Margaret) Billingsley of Lafayette, and Mrs. Francis (Clementina) Osinski of Montrose, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister and brother, Mrs. Phebe Rhodes and Alfred, of Rushville. A son, Alfred M., two brothers, a sister, a half-brother and two half-sisters preceded him in death. Requiem Mass will be sung at 1:30 p.m. Friday in St. Gabriel Church. Burial will be in the family lot in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 that night." Favorite expression - in a letter dated 4-10-1976 son Arthur R. Saxon wrote that "one of Dad's favorite expressions was: 'It's all in knowing how!' ".
