Arthur Richard Saxon

Arthur Richard Saxon was a son of Arthur "Gillespie" Saxon and Margaret Rosina Walsh Saxon. His siblings were Robert Kenneth Saxon, Herbert Leslie Saxon, Alfred Martin Saxon, Mary Helen Saxon, Margaret Bernadette Saxon Billingsley, and Clementina Frances Saxon Osinski. Arthur enjoyed traveling, golf (at least once scoring a hole in one!), televised sports, photography, reading, and genealogy.

Arthur served in Alaska during WW II as a "Technician 5". His Honorable Discharge record given at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio on 5 Oct 1944 shows he was 39 years of age and his army specialty was as a traffic rate clerk. Arthur's periods of active duty were listed as 17 September 1942 to 23 September 1943; his discharge date was 5 October 1944. Arthur's character reference was "excellent"; he received an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon.

He was sent from Fort Harrison to Camp Claiborne, La., from there to Ft. Lawton and then to Alaska, where he is doing office work. He writes that the food is fine, as is the personnel and everything about the post where he is stationed."

A graduate of Fairview High School in 1920, he moved to Louisville for residence in the 1920s. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Alaska. For many years, he was employed as a tariff rate agent for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. An amateur photographer, he exhibited and won awards for photography at the Kentucky State Fair. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville. Survivors include a sister, Mary Helen Saxon of Connersville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel Church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
