Obit August 25, 1927 paper unknown: Former Hawthorn Man Killed by Auto: Saturday last, Aug. 20, Mr. George Hepler, aged 80 years, a former resident of Hawthorn, this county, but of late a resident of Indiana, Pa., was run down by an auto at Slippery Rock, Pa., and so badly injured that he died three hours after the accident. Mr. Hepler had attended the Heper - Armagost reunion at Squirrel Hill on Friday of last week and had gone home with Charley Hepler of Tarentum, Pa. On Saturday he accompanied Charley and some others who were going to Conneaut Lake to attend a picnic. When the party reached Slippery Rock they had a flat tire and the car was stopped. Mr. Hepler and two others got out of the car and started across the street to a restaurant when a car came along and before he could get out of the way it struck him and knocked him down. An examination revealed that he had one broken leg, several ribs were stoved in and his head was crushed. Undertaker Sloan of Hawthorn was communicated with and on Sunday he went to Slippery Rock and brot the body to Hawthorn where burial took place Monday afternoon of this week. Deceased is survived by two sons and one daughter, namely, Hardy of Butler; Albert of Reynoldsville, and Mrs. Minnie Rittenhouse, wife of Rev. Rittenhouse of Indiana, with whom Mr. Hepler had been making his home since the death of his wife about two years ago. He was a brother of the late Milton Hepler of near town, and an uncle of H. S. Armagost and Mrs. Lizzie Mohney of this place. Since the above was put in type we have been furnished with the following data: Mr. Hepler was a son of Jacob and Mary (Brinker) Hepler, and was born in Porter township, Aug. 1847. He was married to Susannah Fetler, who died April 27, 1926. He is survived by 13 grandchildren in addition to his two sons and one daughter above named. The deceased was a member of the M. E. Church. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. Banks of Hawthorn. Mr. Hepler was a man of high christian character and by nature had a quiet and unassuming dispostion.
