Shadrack was the first-born son of Edward Richards and Elizabeth Stewart in Henry Co VA [before it became a part of newly-forming Franklin Co]. He worked the plantation and raised livestock on the land his father had settled.

Shadrack married Susannah Hamilton on October 28 1779 in Henry Co VA and raised these children:
1. Sarah "Sally" R. +[1783] no marriage
2. Elizabeth "Betsey" [1785] no marriage
3. Joel [1786] +Lucy Warren
4. David [1797] +Mary "Polly" Hodges
5. Nancy [1800] +Joab Hodges

On the 27th day of September of 1786, Shadrack purchased 169 acres on the north branch of Chesnut Creek from Edmund Randolph, Governor of Virginia.

Tax records 1782 Henry County for Shadrack Richards:
Tithes: 1 Slaves: 1 Horses: 2 Cattle: 8

Tax records 1788 Franklin County bear his name, along with father Edward's and brother Waitman's.
