Nancy was born the daughter of Edward Richards and Elizabeth Stewart in Franklin County Virginia. Edward owned a large plantation between Sydnorsville and Sontag, about 6.4 miles south of Rocky Mount.

Nancy married John Harger, who owned land just west of her father's, as shown on the Settlers Map of Franklin County.
