Betsey was born the daughter of Shadrack Richards and Susannah Hamilton in Franklin County Virginia.
Betsey never married, but remained in the home of her parents until their passing.
Her father Shadrack provided for Betsey, and her unmarried sister Sally, in his will:
"At the death of me and my wife it is my will and desire that all the remainder of my lands and estate and personal property be equally divided between my two daughters, namely Betsey Richards and Sally Richards, to them and to the lawful heirs of their bodies forever."
In the 1830s, Betsey traveled west with her brother Joel & his family to Cuivre Township, St. Charles County in Missouri, settling just a bit north west of present day Wentzville. The 1850 census of that locale shows an Elizabeth Richards living with Joel Richards' family.
