Joseph Eller, Long Resident Here Dies - Joseph F. Eller, 72 year old Idaho county pioneer and veteran of 12 years work as peace officer, died Sunday afternoon at General hospital after an illness of several years.
Born August 7, 1877 at Gravitt, Arkansas, Mr. Eller came to Idaho in 1886. In June, 1902, he married Bertha Twilegar [Terwillegar] at Grangeville. The couple located at what for years was known as the Joe Eller Crossing in Lawyer's Canyon, on the road between Grangeville and Nezperce. They lived there for 25 years.
In 1929 the Ellers moved to Grangville where in 1932 Eller became a deputy sheriff, serving under Sheriff Walter Altman. He later served as a deputy to Sheriff Bud Taylor and except for one and a half years as a guard in the state penitentiary at Boise, continued to work as a deputy until 1944.
In addition to his wife, Mrs. Bertha Eller of Grangeville, he is survived by four sons, Frank, Vern, Vance and Dale Eller of Idaho county; one daughter, Mrs. Rita Coons, Bishop, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Tefft of Grangeville; and a twin sister, Mrs. Mattie Nash, Spokane. Three brothers also survive. They are, William of Grangeville; Tom of Waitsburg, Wash. and Henry of Aleck [Alix], Alberta, Canada. Ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Ailor chapel, the Rev. James Updike of the Christian Church officiating.
