John was born in Kentucky the son of John Montgomery and Hannah Cantrell and the grandson of Silas Montgomery and Agnes "Aggie" Sizemore. He married first to Lucy Ann Jenkins the daughter of Jim Jenkins and Louise Wages. Their children are; Arizona Montgomery-died young, Hattie (Montgomery) Montgomery, Chester Montgomery, Mattie Montgomery, Mose Montgomery, Leck Montgomery and Blanche (Montgomery) Montgomery. On June 22, 1925 he married Martha Caldwell the daughter of Samuel Jay and Nancy (Brock) Caldwell. Their children are; Hazel (Montgomery) Wages Nichels, Ellis Montgomery, Ollie Montgomery, Melvin Montgomery, Eldon Montgomery, Genoise Montgomery, Reva Jane (Montgomery) Fugate, Pat Montgomery and Lena Mae Montgomery.
