Silas was born in Kentucky the son of John Montgomery and Hannah Cantrell and the grandson of Silas Montgomery and Aggie Sizemore. On April 19,1893 he married Jane Jackson the daughter of David William Jackson and Nancy "Nannie" McCarty. Silas and Jane's children are; Eliza (Montgomery) McCarty, David Montgomery, Lula Dosha (Montgomery) Howard, John Montgomery, Willie Montgomery, Nannie (Montgomery) Craft, Hannah "Hanner" (Montgomery) Helton, Calvin Montgomery, Mattie (Montgomery) Adams, Gladie (Montgomery) Howard, Albert M. Montgomery, George Montgomery and Emily (Montgomery) Kennard.
