David Vaughn was the eighth child of early settlers Joseph and Sarah Vaughn McCracken. He was married 3 times: first, to Mary Garrett, there being no children; second, to Annie Jones, who bore him five children; third, to Mary Haynes, who had three children. According to Alden McCracken, "David was a man of charming personality, genial and courteous, intelligent, and interesting in conversation... He was a great reader and well versed in history...In politics he was a Democrat, holding fast to the principals of Jefferson. He threw his whole strength in the interests of the Confederacy, and regretted that he could not enter service. But he served his country well at home, giving of his means to feed the soldiers who were passing to and fro through the country...He was a Christian, holding fast to the word of God. David was brave and courteous. He lived and labored 87 years in the community where he was born and died, leaving behind a noble record".

David's children were: William Pinkney, Sarah, Thomas Benton, Enos, Joseph P., Laura A, David John Cansler, and Margaret Ellen.
