Sarah was the daughter of David Vaughn and Annie Jones McCracken of Crabtree in Haywood County. After the Civil War, she and her husband Thomas Josiah Ferguson and their family spent three months clearing a way across Sandy Mush Gap from Crabtree to settle on a farm in the valley. They were the second family in the area. Sarah came down with rheumatic fever and lost her eyesight and was an invalid for thirty some years.
