John and Leanah were the parents of ten children. A. H. McCracken wrote of him, "Of all the men I ever knew, Uncle John impressed me the most. It was not what he said to me in words that impressed me, for he was a man of few words, but his personality. That was something in his very makeup that demanded your respect. He was indeed a gentleman of the old school, refined in taste, polished in manners, and had a mind tht was keen and fertile. He stood as a great mountain peak in his community, stable and unshaken. His advice was sought after and heeded. He was remarkably courageous and energetic...Although he had plenty to keep him in his old age, he never quit work. Yet he did not let work come between him and his church services. He was always at his place at both the Saturday and Sunday services...His coming was a perfect dial, for he was no idler, and when he came it was time for business. And just as soon as the benediction was pronounced, he mounted his horse, and rode away...He was a strong man, both mentally and physically, honest, liberal, and always ready to help the worthy."
