Cary was the first child of pioneer settlers Joseph and Sarah Vaughn McCracken.Born in Georgia, she only about two years old when her parents moved to North Carolina. At age sixteen, she married Josiah Crawford and they made their home in the Bald Creek Community of Upper Crabtree near the places their parents had settled earlier.
Carey was the mother of eleven daughters and one son: Annie, Sarah, Rebecca, Marguerite, Altha, Mira, Cynthia, Melinda, Amelia, Nancy, Martha, and James. W. T. Crawford, the son of Melinda, became a noteworthy citizen of Haywood County, serving four terms in the US Congress.
