Joseph “Ed” and Jennie Hutchinson were married on Oct. 24, 1899 at Westmoreland, Kansas, and in 1890 followed his family to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Ed worked as a blacksmith and at some point had a butcher shop and a hardware store in Martin. Ed and Jennie had two daughters, Myrtle and Clara. Jennie died of tuberculosis in 1893.
Martha was born April 1, 1884, near Denby on Spring Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her parents were Kate Robinson and Joseph Rooks. At the time she and Ed met in 1898, she was working in a bank in Cody. Her parents had a ranch 14 miles northwest of Cody in Bennett County. She and Ed were married in 1904. In 1907, they moved their family to the Rooks place and it became the Livermont ranch for the next 40 years. In 1913, they had Anton Tiska build a two story house on the ranch. The house was purchased by Dr. Sebring and moved to Martin in 1949.
In 1912, Ed was elected as one of the first three Bennett County commissioners. At their first meeting, they established school districts and passed a resolution to build a court house in Martin.
Ed and Martha had eleven children. Ed died at Pine Ridge Hospital on July 18, 1946. Martha sold their ranch and moved to Wanblee in 1949.
