Lester grew up on the family ranch in southeastern Bennett County, SD. with his parents, six brothers and three sisters. He attended school in Kadoka and Cedar Lake School. He and Vivian Redmond were married in Kadoka in 1936. They lived south of Vetal and moved to a ranch north of Wanblee in 1943, where he lived the remainder of his life.
He and Vi were parents to Joyce (Eckes), Paul jr., and Helen (Bartling). A son, Dennis, died in infancy.
