Lucy Ann Melton was the fifth of nine known children born to James Mattison "Matt" and Mary Jane "Polly" (Matthews) Melton. She was born January 4, 1861 in Christian County, Missouri. The family was residing in Finley in 1870. She married Stephen Decatur Melton, of a different Melton line, at the age of 21. She and Doc Melton had nine children whom survived to adulthood: Epp, Effie, Kate, Clifford, Flora, Birdie, Purd, Bill and Lucy. At the age of 38 and almost eight months after the birth of her last child, she died. Her daughter, Birdie, told Kenny Melton that there were three babies that died at birth. He had also been told that Lucy had several miscarriages. Mrs. Melton's death was detailed in the Christian County Republican: "Died at her home at Spokane, MO, Tuesday, March 14th, 1899, Mrs. Melton, wife of Dr. Melton, leaving husband and nine children to mourn her loss. She was taken bad on Sunday, the 12th with an attack of the bilious fever, followed by indigestion and congestion of the bowels. Dr. Melton used all possible skill to effect relief, but seeing it was impossible, he ordered that Dr. Elkins of Ozark be telephoned for, which was done as soon as possible, but the wire being down east of Highlandville, Frank Davis rode to Selmore, and finding it would be impossible to get him before morning, returned finding she had departed this life. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of all. They lament their great loss but submit to a higher hand and look to the time of restoration, the goal of all. The remains were interred in the Prospect Cemetery. May God heal broken hearts. A Friend"
