Harry D. Johnson Dies of Heart Attack at Riverton
Harry Delbert Johnson, 58, of Smoot died Oct 25 of a heart attack at his daughter's farm in Riverton, Wyo.
Mr Johnson had been helping on the farm while his daughter's husband, LaDell Harrison was hospitalized.
Funeral services were held in Smoot.
Harry Delbert Johnson was born June 15, 1899 at Smoot Wyoming, to Charles A. Johnson and Annie Olson Johnson. Other members of the family were Arthur, Ellen, Sadie, Francis, Orson, Alice, a twin sister, Irene, Reuben, Pearl, Elva and Charley.
Having an interest in medicine he attended and graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. After receiving his doctor's degree he began his medical practice in Elko, Nevada, but it didn't work out so he obtained employment in a open pit copper mine with his brother Charley. He worked there for the winter and then returned to Star Valley and worked on his father's farm.
He was married to Cleo Roberts on October 12, 1923 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived on the Johnson ranch about three years where two children, Lela and Re V. were born. Then the family moved to Afton and Harry herded his father's sheep. While in Afton another child Helen was born.
In 1927 they moved to their present ranch location in Smoot. His father had given him seven milk cows, a mowing machine and two horses. Most of the ground had been plowed but there was no home or buildings on the ranch. They built a two-room log house. Their son Donald was born in this house in 1933. The next few years being difficult one, in order to make ends meet, he found employment with the highway department.
In the following years he continued to work on the farm and developed and built up the ranch to its present condition.
In 1945 he was called on a stake mission. Since then he has served as superintendent of the Sunday School, 2nd counselor in the bishopric, and at the time of his death he was a member of the stake ward teaching committee.
His whole life and interest seemed to revolve around helping his children and grandchildren. He had many friends in the valley and was always anxious to help them in any way he possibly could.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother two sisters, Ellen and Pearl and two brothers, Francis and Arthur.
Those who survive him are his widow four children, 13 grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters.
