CLEDA A. BUTLER KILLED IN LOGGING ACCIDENT
Cleda A. Butler, age 53, a resident of rural route 2, was fatally injured about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when a log rolled off a truck, crushing him beneath it.
The accident occurred on the J.O. farm, four miles south of French Lick. Mr. Butler was employed as a log hauler and was helping to load the logs onto a truck.
He was born in Shoals on February 14, 1909, the son of Alfred and Anna (Gammon) Butler. He served in the Army during World War 2 and had never married.
He leaves three brothers and four sisters: Clarence, Roscoe and Albert, Mrs. Emma Murray, Mrs. Margaret Probasco and Mrs. Dora Gray, all of Shoals, and Mrs Christina Spurgeon of French Lick.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m.Sunday, at the Queen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Hawkins conducting the rites.
The Hanson McFee Post of the American Legion conducted Military rites at the grave. Color bearers and color guards were Robert Sherfick, Gene Boyd, Elmer Bauer and Chet Porter.
Pallbearers were Samuel Bough, Robert Hawkins, J.E. Yarnell, Dean Walls, Thomas Harder and Rex Pruett. Sgt.-at-arms was Wilson Gerkin and the firing squad was composed of Charles Hawkins, Bill Ervin, Carl Vincent, Jr., Alves Harder, Eddie Jones, William Keller, Edward Henry and Clyde Hawkins.
James L Stiles served as Chaplain, Robert E Fall folded the flag and Warren Keller was Bugler.
Interment was made in the Butler Cemetery in Lost River Township.
