Gottfried was the son of Henry and Eva Margaret (Becker) Stricker. He was born in Saratov, Russia and came to the United States with his parents in 1902. They lived in Barton County, Kansas until 1905 when they moved to the Bender Hill neighborhood in Russell County. In 1911, they moved to their own farm south of Russell.

Gottfried married Mollie Niedenthal on 12 July 1918 at the family home. They were the parents of fourteen children. One son, Henry Hubert, died as an infant.

In 1963, Gottfried retired from active farming and he and Mollie moved to Russell.

For many years, he was a member of the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church having been baptized and confirmed in that faith early in his life. After the Trinity Bender Hill church closed, he became a member of St. John Lutheran Church at Russell.

Gottffied was preceded in death by his parents, son, grandson Brian Reich, two brothers and two sisters.

He was survived by his wife, seven sons, six daughters, one brother, one sister, 30 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

His funeral was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas on 8 September 1990. His sons were the pallbearers.
