JOSEPH HENRY HAMM

─═════════ ✿ڰۣڿ✿ Biography ✿ڰۣڿ✿ ═════════─

Joseph Henry Hamm was born in Monroe County, Indiana, on Monday, 7 April 1873. He was the third child born to Charles Henry Hamm and Mary Ann (Taylor) Hamm. At the time of his birth his father was 29 years old and his mother was 33 years old. He joined a brother, John William Hamm, who was four years old and a sister, Sarah Josephine Hamm, who was two years old.

The family would continue to grow with the birth of a brother, Oscar Hamm, born in September 1877 when Joseph was four years old; a sister, Matilda Catherine Hamm, born 27 June 1878, when he was five years old; and then another brother, Charles Hamm, born on 1 May 1879, when Joseph was six years old.

It is worth noting that Charles and Mary Ann had a child die in infancy. This child is likely to have been born before John Willis or between Joseph Henry and James Oscar. In the 1910 Census it states that Mary Ann is the mother of seven children with five living. At this time Charlie, the youngest known child had died in 1901.

In 1880 the family was living in Van Buren township in Monroe County, Indiana. His father was a farm laborer and his mother took care of the house and children. At the time, Joseph was seven years old.

We don't have a clear record of the details of Joseph and his family's lives between 1881 - 1898 because of the fire that destroyed the 1890 Census, but the family seems rather stable and it's doubtful that they moved locations. Certainly, his parents had not moved out of Van Buren Township during that time.

On Sunday, 27 May 1900, 27-year-old Joseph married Della F. Worley, in Monroe County, Indiana. Michael H. Buskirk officated the ceremony. Della apparently had two children from a previous marriage or relationship. Her son, Wilton was born in 1894 and her daughter, Maggie, was born in 1897. It's not clear how long the marriage between Joseph and Della lasted, but it was less than four years. After their marriage Della went on to marry Thomas Burch and have several other children.

Joseph and Della appear in the 1900 Census, living in Van Buren Township, Indiana. Joseph is a day laborer. Della's two children are not listed on the census.

With a failed marriage, Joseph took his time before marrying a second time. On Sunday, 28 March 1909, he married Lillie Catherine Ham. He was 35 years old and she was 17. David Burks officated the ceremony.

On 28 December 1909, Joseph and Lillie had their first child while living in Stanford. Matilda Ann Hamm was born to her 36 year old father and 18 year old mother. Twelve other children would follow. They are:

Thelma Lucille Hamm, born December 3, 1911
James Wilfred Hamm, born November 13, 1913
Frieda Mae Hamm, born February 24, 1916
Lucille Della Hamm, born February 18, 1918
Elmer Von Elsworth Hamm, born February 18, 1920
Mary Mariah Hamm, born March 13, 1922
Charles Marion Hamm, born January 11, 1924
Rodney Blaine Hamm, born February 19, 1926
Ruth Alice Hamm, born January 4, 1928
Maude Stella Hamm, born February 2, 1930
Mattie Louis Hamm, born February 2, 1932, and
Joseph Henry Hamm, Jr., born August 28, 1934

On Monday, February 28, 1944, Joseph lost his beloved wife, Lillie. She was 52 years old. Two of their sons, Wilfred and Charles, were fighting overseas in WWII when their mother died. Joseph had many heartaches losing his parents, two brothers and a cherished daughter during his lifetime.

He lived his entire married life in Van Buren Township and remained there after the death of Lillie. Joseph lived a little more than 12 years after his wife's death. He saw many of his children get married and have babies of their own.

Joseph quietly died in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 1959. He died at home at the age of 86. He left behind 12 children, 28 grand children, and two great-grandchildren. He is buried next to his, Lillie, at Garrison Chapel in Van Buren Township, Monroe County, Indiana.
