Raleigh Ernest Barlowe (aka Barlow) was the son of Julius Posatale Barlowe (aka Barlow) and Temperance Cordelia “Tempie” McClurd. He was born in Watauga County, NC on November 30, 1891.
He married Lydia R (Liddie) Townsend about 1910. Per the 1910 Census, Raleigh and Liddie had been married 0 years and Liddie had 0 children. Family members believe that Liddie died in 1910 or 1911 and no children were born of this marriage.
On September 15, 1912, Raleigh married Laura Stamey. They were married by Laura’s father, Rev. Elias A. Stamey, at Altamont, Avery County, NC.
Raleigh and Laura had eight children, Ovela, Kay, Donald, Ruby and Mary and these three children that died as infants: Minda, Jollie Tate and Bernice Othela.
Raleigh was a farmer, timber worker and Section Hand (railroad maintenance) for the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC), which was also known as Tweetsie.
He was a member of Watauga Baptist Church, member of Junior Order Mason’s Lodge, and attended 2nd Grandfather School.
Raleigh, age 35, died on July 22, 1927 at Banner Elk, Avery County, NC. Survivors included his parents, Julius and Tempie; his wife, Laura; his five children, Ovela, Kay, Donald, Ruby and Mary; his sister, Maude “Maudie” and five brothers, Oren, Vernie, Paul, Stanley and Manley.
