Temperance Cordelia “Tempie” McClurd Barlowe, was born October 16, 1869, in Caldwell County, NC. She was a daughter of James and Mary "Polly" Preswood/Prestwood McClurd.

Tempie died March 30, 1946 at Banner Elk, Watauga County, NC.

Tempie’s paternal grandparents were Rev. Isaac McClurd and Sarah Clark McClurd. Isaac McClurd was the first known settler of the Grandfather Community (Watauga/Avery Counties, NC). He settled between 1815-1820 and claimed 2000 acres of land at the head of the Watauga River. He was a farmer, a felt hat maker and a Baptist preacher. In 1844, he helped form the first church in the Grandfather Community, the Watauga Baptist Church. Isaac was the first pastor of this church and he served as pastor for many years.

Tempie’s father, James McClurd, was a farmer, postmaster, schoolteacher and Justice of the Peace. He donated land for the first school in the Grandfather Community, The Grandfather School. He is believed to be the first schoolteacher at The Grandfather School, and the first postmaster of Grandfather Post Office. The first post office was set up in his home. He was a deacon at the Watauga Baptist Church. At one time, James McClurd owned most of the land in the upper Watauga Community. In the 1850s, he used his land as collateral for a bond for the Sheriff of Watauga County, Cobb McCandles, who was also the tax collector. Apparently, McCandles was charged with embezzlement of the tax monies he collected. McCandles absconded and the bond was forfeited, thus the land of James McClurd was sold at public auction. Later, James was able to buy back his home place and several hundred acres of his original land.

Tempie married Julius Posatale Barlow, son of Calvin and Ritta Bentley Barlow about 1888.

Tempie and Julius had 9 children, 8 sons and 1 daughter:

(1) Charlie Posatale married Lillian (Lillie) Stamey and they had 3 children. One son died as an infant.

(2) Raleigh Earnest married Ledia (Liddy) Townsend who died not too long after their marriage. They did not children. Raleigh then married Laura Stamey, who was a sister to Charlie’s wife, Lillie. Raleigh and Laura had 8 children. 3 of their children died as infants.

(3) Maude Pearl “Maudie” married Robert Pearman and they had 3 children.

(4) James Oren, who later changed his name to Oren James, married Mary Lizziebell (Belle) Williams. Belle’s mother was Addie Stamey Williams, sister to Lillie and Laura, the wives of Oren’s brothers, Charlie and Raleigh. So, Belle’s ‘blood aunts’ were also her sisters-in-law. Oren and Belle had 7 children. The first 3 children died as infants. After Belle died, Oren married Florence (Flora) Fox and they had one son who died as an infant. Oren and Flora were married for only a brief time. After their divorce, Oren married Millie Williams. Millie was a first cousin to Oren’s first wife, Belle. Their fathers, Nemore and Alfred Williams, were brothers. Oren and Millie had 4 children.

(5) Vernie Rudolph married Eva McGee and they had 5 children.

(6) Calvin born/died in 1902

(7) Paul Cubbie was handicapped and he did not marry.

(8) Stanley Spain married Oakley Gouge and they had 3 children – 1 son and twin daughters.

(9) Manley did not marry.

One of Tempie’s granddaughters, Mary Barlowe Styles, said that Tempie loved to read the detective stories that appeared in a detective magazine and “The Grit.” Mary said this is where Tempie got some of the unusual names she gave to her children. Since Tempie’s father was a schoolteacher, he probably taught her to read.
