Marion Richard Arnold was the oldest son of William Arnold and the former Sarah Jane Dowdney, natives of Mississippi. Richard, the fraternal twin of Mary Vianna Arnold Knapp, was the first of the Arnold family to relocate to east Texas, settling in Smith County where he was employed by the Cotton Belt Railroad.

After becoming engaged to marry, Marion Richard felt a larger house would be necessary for newlyweds who anticipated having a large family. He gave his existing house in Smith County to his parents who had relocated from Louisiana.

The husband-to-be built a larger house that would be a perfect fit for a large family. It was never to be.

Marion Richard Arnold became ill and died in the Cotton Belt Railroad Employees Hospital in Texarkana, Arkansas just two weeks short of the day he was to marry.
