Jim was the youngest son of William and Sarah Jane (Dowdney) Arnold. Like his father and his grandfather, he was a farmer. His success far exceeded that of his forebears.
Jim Arnold married Miss May Jarvis, daughter of Lycurgis and Susan Alice (Thompson) Jarvis on October 16, 1904. They would be the parents of two sets of fraternal twins and two other daughters born in single births. They raised their family in a large, two-story house with a wide veranda that was perfect for whiling away a summer day by relaxing in a rocking chair with a glass of ice-cold lemonade, and watching the world go by on the highway running past the farm.
Jim's and May's children made them proud, all being successful. The one heartbreak with the devastating loss of their oldest daughter, Louise, who was a teacher in the New London School when it was blown to pieces when an un-detected odorless gas leak was ignited by the unsuspecting shop teacher. Nearly 400 students, teachers, and support staffers died that day, March 18, 1937. This tragedy led to the infusion of an unpleasant but very distinctive odor into natural gas so that such a horrific event would never be repeated.
Being of hardy pioneer stock, Jim and May picked up the shattered pieces of their lives and went on with life, setting an example for others to live by.
