RICE, T.M. – Dr. T.M. Rice of Avoca died last Friday morning at a Hot Springs sanitarium following a long illness but was in the sanitarium only a few days, having been taken there by his son, Hugh Rice, with the hope that he would be benefited. The body was brought back to Rogers Saturday morning and the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at Buttram's Chapel, near Pea Ridge, under the direction of the Masons, assisted by Rev. J.T. Willcoxon, pastor of the Central M.E. church at Rogers and Rev. Tom Clark, pastor of the First Christian church at this place. The attendance at the funeral was said to be the largest ever present as the deceased was one of the most widely known physicians and was one of the oldest residents of the county. Dr. Rice was born in Riceville, McMinn county, Tenn. June 13, 1855, the son of the founder of Riceville, the town having been built on his father's farm. In 1859 the family moved to Pea Ridge, Ark. He graduated from the Missouri Medical College in 1876 at the age of 21 and began his practice in Brightwater, later named Best Water, north of Rogers. Dr. Rice was married in 1883 to Miss Amelia Johnson, a sister of F.E. Johnson, Rogers. Up to the time Dr. Rice was stricken ill about three months ago he had a large practice around Avoca where he has made his home for several years. Besides his wife the physician leaves his son, Hugh, of Chicago and six brothers, M.S., T.S. and R.M. Rice of Pea Ridge, W.C. Rice, Huntsville, C.M. Rice of Bentonville and Dr. C.A. Rice of Rogers. Dr. Rice was active in Masonic circles and was a member of Pea Ridge Lodge No. 119, F. and A.M. He has a host of friends all over northwest Arkansas who are grieved to learn of his death.
