He grew up in the Tuttle area, where he met his bride of 67 years, Alpha Dorene (Johnson) Koonce. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. John retired from York International. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, camping, fixing cars and motorcycles, OU football and studying God’s Word. He dedicated time to teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir and even serving as a bi-vocational pastor during his younger years. During his final time on Earth, he resided at Harbor Chase in Oklahoma City, where he was dearly loved by his caretakers, who referred to him as “Papa J.”
John was preceded in death by his wife Alpha Dorene Koonce; parents Guy and Edith Koonce; brothers Bob, Cecil, Gene and Guy (Junior); sons Stephen Leon Koonce and Stanley Dwain Koonce; daughter Theresa Dorene Hayes.
John is survived by daughters-in-law, Marilyn Koonce and Carol Koonce; son-in-law Gary Hayes; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
