Stephen was the 8th child of Antony & Helen. Like most of his siblings he was born at Monbulla near Penola. Not much is known of his childhood, but he certainly developed skills for hunting and horsemanship. He had worked with his father and brothers for some time and learned his bushcraft.
In 1908 Stephen joined the SA Police Force and relocated to Adelaide. This is where he met & Married Elizabeth Janet Logan. (Their first child Eunice Elizabeth was born at Payneham)
As an mounted constable, Stephen was appointed to Pinnaroo where they moved into the first Police Home that was provided. It was also whilst he was there the first arrest took place on 10th Oct 1910. In the 9 years they were appointed to Pinnaroo, there were approx 180 arrests. His final day was 10 May 1919 when he was transferred to Tailem Bend. (2 more children were born in Pinnaroo - Stephen Anthony in 1913 & Helen Audrey in 1918)
In 1922 he was transfered to Victor Harbor (it was here their 4th child Claire was born).
