Wilhelmina was the eleventh child and seventh daughter of Antony & Helen McElroy. Her birth certificate records her name as "Wilhemmina Menzies Victoria" but was always known as Menzie. She, like her siblings, was baptised at the Penola Presbyterian Church when she was nearly 3 years old.
Menzie could read and write and proved to have business acumen. As a young woman, she spent some time as a governess to the Miller family at Campsie. Later she started the first newsagency in Penola in Portland Street.
In 1914 she married Garnet Wolsley Pannell (Dan as he was known). After the marriage, Menzie's sister Mary took over the newsagency and moved it to the main street (Church street). Mary's family had constant illness so it was sold to Mrs Shank.
Menzie & Dan started another business of Plants and Florist (as she had always had a love of flowers and did really will at the local Shows).
Menzie and Dan had 4 children who were all born in Penola. Ewan, Margaret, Jessie and Brian.
After the passing of Dan (at the age of 79) Menzie lived in the family home in Portland street unitl her passing in 1973 ... 1 week short of her 86th birthday. This made her the oldest member of her family.
She was remembered by family as being a very patient, humble and strong person who had great faith in the Lord. She was reunited with her husband in the Penola Cemetery.
