Thomas D. Farnsworth was a stone mason and came to the US in the early 1830s with his parents and siblings. The family settled in Verona, Oneida County, NY. There Thomas married Phebe Hyland probably about 1846. In the 1850 census, Thomas and Phebe and two children were listed in the Town of Verona (probably in State Bridge), Oneida County, NY in the household of his wife's parents. Apparently they went to Canada soon after that as their son Joseph was born there in 1852. In 1854, Thomas D. and his brother Wright applied for land in Perth County, Ontario but they soon relinquished their claims. By 1856, Thomas had moved to West Oxford Township, Oxford County, Canada West (now Ontario, Canada) where he and Phebe had several more children.

According to one of their daughters, Roseann(a), Phebe died in Beachville and is buried there. Sometime between 1865 and Jun 1870 Thomas moved to Rose, Wayne County, NY where he married widow Julia Dunham Wolf. Two of Thomas's sons married two of Julia's daughters. Thomas D. died in an accident on 4 Aug 1890 when he drove his horse and wagon into a ravine and broke his neck. He is buried next to Julia in Rose Cemetery.
